The Rice Project

About

The rice project has 3 main objectives. Firstly, we aim to meet the basic need of the victims of the Tsunami by distributing rice to feed their stomach. Secondly, we aim to continue to create the awareness that there are still many Sri Lankans who need help to restore their houses by photographing their real life conditions. Thirdly, we seek to help raise funds through the photographic exhibition and work towards providing a permanent and safe home for the victims of the Tsunami

In order to achieve all our objectives, there are four important stages of The Rice Project.

Stage 1 - Online Photo Competition (15 Jun to 8 Jul 2008)

Stage 1 is an online photo competition. Working hand in hand with Canon, we aim to promote photography and sieve out the budding talents. All participants are encourage to submit a series of photos (up to five) related to the topic of Living. Contestants are encourage to think out of the box. It could be growing up moments of a baby or a child learning to take his first steps. It could also be the life story of an physically disabled athlete training for the Paralympics. In addition to the photos, a photo essay ranging from 200 to 400 words to support their thoughts is required.

Instead of offering cash prizes or photographic related equipments for this photo competition as of every photo competition, we have decided to reward the six overall winners of the photo competition with an expedition trip to Sri Lanka to distribute rice and document the country. This is a once in a lifetime dream for many photo enthusiast. Promoting the spirit of photojournalism, we aim to encourage budding photographers to take up the challenge and win a chance to participate in a project that looks into the realness of life and use photography to improve the well being of fellow human beings.

Stage 2 - Photo Expedition, Sri Lanka (10 Aug to 20 Aug 2008)

Stage 2 is the photographic expedition to document Sri Lanka, both the beautiful natural sceneries and the Tsunami hit areas especially the eastern coast of Sri Lanka. Supported by the High Commission of Sri Lanka to Singapore, the Sri Lankan Tourism Board and the Sri Lankan Airlines, the team can definitely look forward to exploring the various interesting nooks and corners of Sri Lanka.

Together with veteran photographers, Alex Soh and Triston Yeo from Theredtree, the six winners of the competition will be learning the finer tips of photojournalism, travel and scenics photography as they explore the land. Besides photography, the team will be distributing rice to the victims of the Tsunami. Three truckloads of rice will be accompanying the team from the Port of Colombo. Along the way, the team will be passing the beautiful beaches along Galle and visiting Yala National Park and finally distributing rice at the Eastern coast such as Batticaloa and Trincomalee.

The most important element of this journey is the witnessing of friendship being built as the team interacts with the Sri Lanka people. As we discover the unique culture of one another, the differences between nations and races do not seem so great after all.

Stage 3 - Photographic Exhibition (Jan 2009)

Stage 3 aims to highlight the fruits of our photographic expedition. With the thousands of photographs that the team has captured, representative pieces will be displayed to the public. Photography is definitely one of the most influential elements in depicting realness to the world. We want to see realness in the human race being brought to its best.

At the photographic exhibition, all the photos will be up for sale both for the corporations and for the public. A major portion of the proceed will be set aside for the final stage of the project and that is to fund the restoration of the houses of the victims of the Tsunami.

Rice momentarily fill the stomach of the Sri Lanka people will ignite the compassionate flames of the hearts of Singaporeans and helped the Sri Lankans have a more permanent home.

Stage 4 - Restoration of the Houses (2009)

Working hand in hand with Habitat for Humanity, we seek to help the victims of the Tsunami to rebuild their houses esp those along the Eastern coast of Sri Lanka. This is a lifetime project and we believe that many who are touched by the photos will come forth and lend their hands to help. The spirit of volunteerism will be at its best as we witness Singaporeans coming forth to help.
